Lone Wolf and Cub Card Trick

Posted in Uncategorized on March 16, 2009 by heckblazer

Ricky Jay is one of the best, if not the best, close-up magicians in the world.  He’s also an actor in a number of films and television shows as well as a magic consultant for movies like The Illusionist and The Prestige.  He’s even written some very amusing  books on unusual performers such as his  Learned Pigs & Fireproof Women.

Since I’ve not yet had the chance to see him perform, I only just now learned that he does a card trick using patter about the Lone Wolf and Cub movie series.  This just made him ten times more awesome (which is pretty damn awesome):

Watching the Watchmen

I just got back from the film.  The two trailers that struck me were for Terminator: Salvation and Star Trek.   For the former, having a terminator that thinks it’s human as a character grabs me for whatever reason, and the melancholy tone in the trailer was different.   As for Star Trek, it looks like for once there will be a Star Trek film with a truly epic scale.  At the worst it looks like it will  suck innew and novel ways for a trek film.

Beware of Elves

According to the Iceland Tourist Board, at 10% of Icelanders believe in elfs and other spirits, and 80% aren’t sure.  That’s why “[t]he Iceland road authority typically responds with sensitivity, routing roads around hallowed boulders or delaying construction long enough to give non-human constituents time to find new accommodations.”  The same thing happened when Alcoa built an aluminum smelter in Iceland: “Before Alcoa could build its smelter it had to defer to a government expert to scour the enclosed plant site and certify that no elves were on or under it.” (The article on Iceland’s financial meltdown is worth reading in full BTW)

Naturally,  in order to properly spot elves you have to go to the Icelandic Elf School.  “Magnus Skarphedinsson, the historian who runs the school, estimates that Iceland is home to up to 20,000 hidden beings. Most are benign creatures, he says, who live in harmony with nature. If provoked, though, they will strike back.”   After a day of training you too can learn how to find the hidden beings.

Sinister

In honor of the Watchmen relesae tomorrow, here is Alan Moore singing “March of the Sinister Ducks”:

Also, an example of his worst fears  of what will be done with Watchmen.
